This blog was created for the purpose of documenting some of the happenings in Haiti as experienced by my father-in-law Neal Peterson. Neal is the manager of Deseret Transportation of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He is one of thousands of church employees and volunteers who have traveled to Haiti in order to offer help and aid to the victims of the 7.0 earthquake that struck on January 12, 2010.

Changing the oil... Under the interior seats. Neal (diesel mechanic for 20+ years) said he had to do an internet search as well as make an international phone call in order the figure out how to check the oil and fluids in the Haitian diesel trucks. "When in Haiti..." he says. :)
Haitian Harley rider. The guards ride these and let Neal have a go - or at least a sit - on one. :)

Neals writes:
"Prersident Thomas S. Monson dedicated Haiti for missionary work in 1983 as an apostle. This is a copy of the dedicatory prayer that hangs in the mission office. They are very proud of having 60+ missionaries to help the 13000 members grow. I spent a day with the Mission President Kevin Joseph on a trip to take tents and relief supplies to a remote Branch in the top of the world called La Valle' de Jacmel. It is not a valley despite it's name. It took five hours by truck and one full hour in a four wheel driver Forunner to get there. He explained that today they set apart 12 new missionaries from two stakes to go to the MTC in the DR for service in Haiti. He also told me that he assigned two missionaries per church building where the evacuees are to act as counselors and to share the gospel to the part member families who request information. Even during a crisis the Work of the Lord moves forward. Haiti is close to Heaven."

Haitian Cyber Cafe. They are just barely starting to get phone service from AT&T and were using satellite phones for the first few weeks. A lot of the people rely on their cell phones to get work. They are very good with computers and one of the dispatchers for DT set up a wireless connection. They are very capable people, they just need the opportunity and resources.
