This blog was created for the purpose of documenting some of the happenings in Haiti as experienced by my father-in-law Neal Peterson. Neal is the manager of Deseret Transportation of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He is one of thousands of church employees and volunteers who have traveled to Haiti in order to offer help and aid to the victims of the 7.0 earthquake that struck on January 12, 2010.

On Monday, Neal and one of the members in Haiti that were hired to drive truck for the Bishop's storehouse took another night run of food to Jacmel. It is a 5 hour drive with 8 percent switchbacks. He said they are done with the training for the Haitian drivers already and that after Monday they would be able to start driving alone. I don't know about anyone else, but being able to drive 8 percent switchbacks after only a few days of training constitutes as a miracle in my book! This picture is of what Neal calls their strategic fuel storage system. Looks like a 5 gallon bucket to me but at least they are using their resources. These people are truly amazing and they don't take anything for granted.

This is Steve Roberts (another DT employee) talking with some of the members who are being trained to run the Bishop's Storehouse. Neal made a very good point in his last e-mail. He said that they did not go down there to feed the saints of Haiti, they are there to support the Priesthood and Relief Society leaders so that they can feed the saints once the volunteers leave. In Neal's words, "This divine system works because Relief Society leaders assess family needs, Bishop's with keys approve orders, recipients serve to the extent of their ability and hunger is curbed in the Lords way. The long term goal is independance and self-reliance."
